Since the Spring of 1993, Smithfield Gourmet Bakery & Café has been Smithfield, Virginia’s quaint café with the charming atmosphere. We are proud of our commitment to good food and good service. Only freshest ingredients and hand-selected seasonal produce are used. Our breads, cakes, and pastries are baked daily, using our own recipes and created on premise. We invite you to come in to enjoy our fantastic food and service then enjoy our beautiful historic town.
We're honored to operate this landmark bakery and café for over twenty-five years! We've devoted a great deal of time & treasure to the preservation of this historic site for the future of our town. The main/ ground floor houses our main dining, baking, and kitchen areas. It’s the bustling-yet-centered heart of this historic building. Our third floor is the perfect space for intimate gatherings, fully restored with original pine floors, exposed brick walls, and original windows. Guest dine and special events sparkle overlooking Main Street’s events.
History behind every corner
Local businessman Jack Blair built our building in the early 1800's. The location itself is one of the ten original land grants from England in 1734. The building housed a brick storehouse for over 20 years. Later, a pharmacy operated here from 1834 through the late 1970's. Since that time, it has served the community by housing various types of businesses. We opened our doors in 1993, and have had the honor of operating a bakery and café for over twenty-five years. Enjoy your meal on the main floor or outside along picturesque Hayden's Lane. Then, ask to see some the unearthed finds from our building's history, including items handled by the successful and pioneering Jack Blair.
